Pork Chops and Applesauce

Sometimes, I really love to try something different.  This had led to my love of sushi, soft shell crab, chicken and bacon pizza, gyros, crepes, oysters and other interesting foods that some people would die before trying.  And sometimes, I need something traditional and normal.  Every now and then, you want a classic chocolate chip cookie with a giant glass of milk on the side.  Or a plate of plain spaghetti with just a little butter and Parmesan.

This week, I had a hankering for pork chops. I have been dying to try out my recipe for red onion jam and thought it would be perfect with pork.  When B and I were on our honeymoon, I had the best meal of my life. It consisted of pork chops slathered in red onion jam and a three cheese casserole on the side.  I was half tempted to recreate the red onion jam and dump it on top of my pork.

Then I decided against it and went classic.  Pork chops and apple sauce.  Does it really get any more traditional?  Instead of popping open a jar of Motz, I decided to give things a whirl and make my own applesauce.  It was an interesting process, to say the least.  One thing is for sure, it was the best applesauce I’ve ever had.  It was chunky and sweet, the way real applesauce should be.  The pork, which I coated in a spice rub, was fantastic.  Just the right amount of spice to it.  It was a great meal for a lazy weeknight.  Test it out for yourself!

Homemade Applesauce

4 apples, peeled, cored and cut into cubes

1/2 cup white sugar

1/2 cup water

1 Tbsp. cinnamon

Combine all of your ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat.  Cover and let cook for 15 to 20 minutes.  Take the apples off the heat and let them cool a bit.  Place them in a bowl and mash them with a fork or potato masher.  I like mine a bit chunky, but feel free to stop at whatever consistency you want.

Pork Chops

2 boneless pork chops

1/2 cup brown sugar

2 Tbsp. cayenne pepper

1 Tbsp. coarse salt

1/4 cup ketchup (feel free to omit the ketchup and make your spice rub dry)

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.  Trim your pork of any fat.  Lay it on a foil-lined pan.  In a small bowl, combine brown sugar, salt, ketchup and cayenne well.  Take each chop and slather it with rub, coating fully.

Place your pan in the oven.  Bake pork chops for 25 to 30 minutes until cooked through.

Serve with homemade apple sauce.

Delish!!!

  1. It’s definitely amazing how much better homemade applesauce is that storebought! My roommate makes her own and I can never help but steal a few bites! Great classic meal! (Though I’ve actually never had the two paired together…but I hear good things!)

    • I’ve never really paired the two together either, but I figured it was worth a shot. And the homemade applesauce was totally worth it! Isn’t homemade always so much tastier?! I don’t know that I’ll ever go back to canned…

  2. This is delicious, and I have all the ingredients to make this. I’d love to guide Foodista readers to your site. I hope you could add this pork chop widget at the end of this post so we could add you in our list of food bloggers who blogged about recipes for pork chop,Thanks!
